“Unrestricted Freedom of Movement” Was “Detrimental to the Rhythm,” Says Bungie

Bungie has officially nerfed one of the most talked-about exploits in Marathon. In the 1.0.5.2 update released on March 31, 2026, the studio fixed a bug that allowed players to cancel slides in ways that maintained momentum while drawing weapons or using the Hook Device ability. The result was movement that felt closer to Quake or Apex Legends than the deliberate, tactical pace Marathon is built around.

In their patch notes and a follow-up statement, Bungie described the exploit as “detrimental to pacing.” They emphasized that “fast repositioning and aggressive movements should have a significant cost — whether that’s a skill burden, increased heat, or greater risk.” The studio made it clear that unrestricted movement, while “more expressive and better for videos,” ultimately harms the gameplay rhythm they want to maintain in their extraction shooter.

Bungie also promised that in the future, all movement-related bugs that can be exploited during matches will be scrutinized equally.

Other Notable Changes in Patch 1.0.5.2

  • Outpost – Destroyed Wing: The area in Molina that was previously closed has been reopened. Loot rewards have been improved and encounters updated to better match the quality of the rewards.
  • Duos Mode Test: Starting April 1 at 7:00 PM CEST, Duos mode will be active in Outpost and disabled in Dead Marsh. This experimental change runs until April 8 at 7:00 PM CEST. Bungie will use the week to evaluate how matches and puzzles feel with only one partner. The future of Duos mode beyond this test period remains unknown.

Why This Matters for Marathon’s Identity

Marathon is designed as a slower, more methodical extraction shooter that rewards positioning, information gathering, and careful decision-making, especially when other Runners or AI enemies are nearby. The slide-cancel exploit undermined that philosophy by enabling overly aggressive, low-risk repositioning.

By addressing it early, Bungie is doubling down on the game’s intended identity: tense, thoughtful raids where every movement has weight. The studio’s transparent communication about the change has been generally well-received, though some players who enjoyed the “expressive” movement are disappointed.
