Bungie has stepped in to correct a confusing situation on the PlayStation Store involving Marathon’s Deluxe Edition upgrade during the current free trial week.
Some PS5 players who downloaded the free trial of Marathon saw a discounted Deluxe Edition upgrade priced at $19.99 and assumed it included the full base game. However, unlike the listings on Steam and the Microsoft Store, the PlayStation Store page did not clearly state that players needed to already own the base game to use the upgrade. As a result, some players ended up purchasing what they believed was the complete Deluxe Edition, only to discover they only received cosmetic items, a rewards pass, and premium currency.
After the issue gained attention, Bungie updated the PlayStation Store listing to clarify the situation. The new message now reads:
“By purchasing this product, you will only be able to access the Deluxe Edition content during the free play week. After that, you will need to purchase the Marathon Edition to access this content.”
More importantly, Bungie has confirmed they will resolve the confusion for affected players. In an official statement on X, the studio said:
“For those who made this purchase before the message was posted on the store page, we will grant the Marathon base edition at no additional cost, in addition to the content of the Deluxe Edition.”
Bungie added that more details on how and when players will receive the base game will be shared soon.
This mix-up comes on top of another recent hiccup. Marathon’s free trial week, which began on June 2 alongside Season 2, suffered from significant connectivity problems at launch. As a result, Bungie extended the free play period from its original end date of June 9 to June 11.
The game is also currently available at a 30% discount ($39.99) across all platforms until June 16.
While the initial lack of clarity on the PS Store was an oversight, Bungie’s decision to proactively grant the base game to affected players has been largely well-received by the community. It shows a willingness to take responsibility for the confusion rather than leaving players out of pocket.
