A free PS5 demo for Final Fantasy Resonance is available today, covering the entire first chapter and allowing save data to carry into the full game. Square Enix also used its State of Play trailer to reveal Sephiroth as an optional opponent ahead of the RPG’s October 22, 2026 launch.
The demo is the most practical announcement for anyone curious about the project’s unusual premise. Resonance asks what the series might look like if it had continued pushing pixel art, presenting its world in HD-2D while retaining crystals, airships, chocobos and a turn-based command battle system. Playing the full opening chapter should make that case more clearly than another carefully edited montage.
Sephiroth waits beyond the main road
The new trailer confirms that players can find and challenge Sephiroth, with a special reward available for defeating him. Square Enix has not explained where the encounter appears or what that reward contains, so the reveal works as a recognizable optional challenge without giving away its place in the wider adventure.
The main story follows a journey to protect crystals scattered across the world from Veritas of the Dark, a force seeking its destruction. Familiar Final Fantasy imagery sits beside an evolved battle system and a more approachable interpretation of the classic job system. The result is intended to feel like an alternate continuation of the series’ early visual language rather than a direct recreation of one numbered entry.
That distinction matters because Sephiroth’s presence could otherwise make the game sound like another visit to the Final Fantasy VII timeline. Here, Sephiroth is a challenge to discover and overcome, not the center of Resonance’s plot. The silver-haired guest is here to ruin someone’s afternoon, but not necessarily the whole narrative.
Carry progress into the October release
Save data from the demo transfers into the full PS5 release, allowing players to continue after the first chapter rather than repeat it. Character progression and the opening story can therefore double as a proper head start, though Square Enix has not announced any demo-exclusive reward.
Final Fantasy Resonance launches for PS5 on October 22. The demo is available through PlayStation Store now, and the State of Play reveal gives prospective players two concrete reasons to try it: a substantial opening chapter today and a Sephiroth encounter waiting somewhere beyond it.
