Metro 2039 will launch on February 4, 2027, 4A Games announced alongside the first console gameplay from its return to post-apocalyptic Moscow. The State of Play footage was captured on PS5 Pro and confirms ray tracing on both PS5 models, including a dedicated Performance Mode targeting 60 frames per second.

The date is a substantial update after the game’s 2027 reveal at gamescom. It also puts the spotlight on the Stranger, a former Spartan who left the Metro behind and has been forced back underground. His armor may mark him as a potential hero, but 4A describes him as a considerably more brutal and adaptable protagonist than that first impression suggests.

A dangerous thaw above Moscow

The gameplay begins after the Stranger reaches the surface, moving through Moscow’s thawing ruins in search of a Novoreich fortress built inside a dam. Radiation is an immediate problem, while damaged apartment blocks hide human and mutant threats. Dense spaces can break apart during combat, forcing quick movement rather than letting every firefight settle into a comfortable corner.

Players still need to manage radiation and equipment, but the Stranger has tools suited to direct confrontation as well as stealth. The Shatun rifle can be charged for silenced headshots, Molotovs can clear groups from cover and the Duplet shotgun handles anything that gets too close. The trailer presents a faster and more kinetic fight than a quiet tunnel crawl without abandoning the resource pressure that gives Metro its identity.

4A Games is keeping the project firmly solo and story driven. That clarification matters as large shooters continue to drift toward shared-world structures, and it leaves the studio free to use its ruined spaces as tightly authored survival environments rather than social hubs with very unfortunate air quality.

PS5 performance details

Both PS5 and PS5 Pro will support ray tracing. The dedicated Performance Mode runs at 60 frames per second, although the developer has not yet detailed resolution targets or differences between the two consoles. More information about DualSense features and additional graphics modes will follow closer to launch.

Metro 2039 is available to wishlist now on PlayStation Store, with preorders planned for later this year. No North American price has been announced. The February 4 date applies to North America, while several regions including Asia, Australia and New Zealand will receive the game on February 5.
