Rhapsody in Scarlet is a brand-new Konami action game for PS5, revealed during today’s State of Play and followed immediately by a story trailer in State of Play Japan. The setting is jazz-soaked 1920s New York, where dazzling streets hide a quieter war among magi, and players step into the shoes of Ellie Myers, a young magus whose destiny arrives faster than any audition call.
Konami is pitching combat that leans on magic and beast partners rather than another pure weapon-swapping brawler. Ellie builds customizable combos that mix close-range strikes, long-range magic, area spells and beast techniques, then adjusts those strings when enemies refuse to stand still. Her companion Sköll is part of that toolkit, turning the fantasy of commanding a beast into something you can actually string together mid-fight.
The story trailer sharpens the character focus after the announcement look. Ellie comes to New York chasing a career as a jazz singer, then gets pulled into the schemes of a mysterious mafia organization. There she meets Ilya Jones, leader of the Seekers, a magus group raised for order, discipline and responsibility. The two clash constantly, then keep fighting side by side until a threat large enough to unsettle the world’s balance forces them into the same corner.
English and Japanese casts are already locked for the leads. Ellie is voiced by Cherami Leigh in English and Akari Kito in Japanese. Ilya is voiced by Hannah Grace in English and Saori Onishi in Japanese. That dual casting underlines how much Konami wants the relationship drama to carry as much weight as the spectacle.
The studio also leaned hard into period texture. Architecture, fashion, cars and Prohibition-era speakeasies were researched on site, then twisted with fantasy districts, beasts and magic so the city feels historical and uncanny at once. Jazz inspired by 1920s swing is meant to sit under the action instead of floating above it as decoration.
Rhapsody in Scarlet is available to wishlist on PlayStation Store. A release window has not been announced, and North American pricing is still under wraps. For a brand-new Konami IP, the pitch is unusually clear already: combo-driven magic, a stubborn jazz singer with a beast at her side, and a New York that looks glamorous until the cloaks come out.
