Sony Scales Back Support for PlayStation VR2 Amidst Declining Interest
The future of Sony’s PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) appears uncertain as the tech giant significantly reduces its investment in virtual reality gaming. Launched on February 22, 2023, the PSVR2 has seen a muted response from both Sony and the gaming community, with few releases and limited announcements over the past year.
Minimal Investment in New Titles
According to a report from Android Central, Sony is drastically cutting funding for virtual reality games, with only two new titles currently in development for the PSVR2. This marks a stark contrast to the company’s initial enthusiasm for the platform, which has since dwindled. In 2023, Sony released only three major titles for the PSVR2: “Horizon Call of the Mountain,” “Gran Turismo 7,” and “Firewall Ultra.”
Studio Closures Reflect Waning Commitment
The diminished support is further highlighted by the closure of key studios involved in PSVR2 game development. First Contact Entertainment, the creators of “Firewall Ultra,” shut down at the end of 2023. Earlier this year, Sony also closed London Studio, known for developing “Blood & Truth,” one of the most acclaimed games for the original PlayStation VR.
Disappointment Among VR Enthusiasts
Sony’s tepid support for the PSVR2 has left many fans disappointed, particularly following the State of Play event on May 30. During this event, only two new VR titles were showcased: “Alien Rogue Incursion” and Skydance’s “BEHEMOTH.” The announcement of “Astro Bot,” a sequel to the highly praised “Astro Bot Rescue Mission” (2018), further frustrated fans as it was revealed that the new game would not support virtual reality.
Uncertain Future for PlayStation VR2
The lack of new game announcements and the reduction in funding cast a shadow over the future of the PSVR2. While the device will gain PC compatibility starting in August, this move is seen by some as a signal of Sony’s shifting focus away from its proprietary VR ecosystem.
Hope for a Revival?
Despite the current outlook, there remains a glimmer of hope among VR enthusiasts that Sony might renew its commitment to virtual reality. However, as it stands, the PSVR2’s prospects appear bleak, with limited new content and a waning presence in Sony’s broader gaming strategy.
