Bungie is playing the long game with Marathon. In a new interview with GamesRadar+, creative director Julia Nardin confirmed the studio has a clear vision for the extraction shooter’s narrative that stretches across multiple years — but it won’t be set in stone. Player actions and community feedback will actively influence how the story unfolds.

“We know where we want to take the story over the next few years,” Nardin explained, “but I don’t want to say it’s completely ‘set in stone’ because it’s important to us that our players can shape it.”

Two Parallel Stories: Past and Present on Tau Ceti IV

The narrative of Marathon is split into two branches:

  • One explores the past events on Tau Ceti IV and aboard the ship Marathon itself, before the player-controlled Runners arrive.
  • The other follows present-day conflicts between powerful corporations fighting for control of the planet.

While the past storyline has a defined resolution, Nardin says it will continue to evolve in ways that connect to both previous seasons and future developments. The goal is to create a living universe where new players can jump in at any time without feeling lost — a clear lesson learned from Destiny 2’s controversial campaign vaulting.

“Players will always be able to uncover the mysteries of Tau Ceti’s past while experiencing the present,” Nardin added. “Each season will be a new entry point for the narrative.”

Seasons Reset Progression for Fair Starts

To keep the experience accessible, Bungie is resetting certain mechanics at the end of each season. Faction progress and the active/passive upgrades it unlocks will be wiped clean, ensuring every Runner — veteran or newcomer — starts on equal footing when a new season begins.

This philosophy also applies to storytelling. Bungie wants Marathon to remain approachable no matter when someone decides to jump in, avoiding the frustration some Destiny players felt when older content was removed.

Marathon Launches March 5 — Will the Story Deliver?

Marathon is set to release on March 5, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. With the game still recovering from a rocky alpha and a recent Server Slam, Bungie’s long-term commitment to narrative depth and player-driven storytelling could be key to building a lasting community.

Whether the ambitious multi-year plan pays off remains to be seen, but the studio’s transparency about learning from past mistakes is a promising sign.
