Team Cherry surprises fans with an emotional gesture: free Silksong codes for those who believed in them back in 2014.
While the industry buzzes about blockbusters like GTA 6, there’s another release carrying a different kind of hype: Hollow Knight: Silksong. Developed by a tiny four-person team, what began as a simple expansion to Hollow Knight has grown into one of the most anticipated indie games of the decade.
Now, just days after confirming that Silksong will finally launch on September 4, 2025, developer Team Cherry has dropped another surprise: every single backer of the original Hollow Knight Kickstarter will receive Silksong for free.
On August 21, 2025, Team Cherry quietly updated their Kickstarter campaign page, the first update in over six years, to share the news. Anyone who supported the 2014 Kickstarter (whether through Kickstarter itself or via PayPal) will be eligible for a free copy of Silksong.
The process is simple: Team Cherry will contact backers using their most recently registered email addresses. If your old email is lost to time (or forgotten passwords), you can reach out directly at ba*****@************om.au with both your old and new addresses to verify your pledge.
The studio also confirmed that if you don’t hear from them before launch, you should use that same email to request your code.
There is one important detail: free codes will only be provided for PC (Steam or DRM-free) and Nintendo Switch (including Switch 2). Unfortunately, no PlayStation or Xbox codes will be distributed, even though Silksong will be available on those platforms at launch.
Still, this generous move cements Team Cherry’s reputation as a studio that hasn’t forgotten its roots, rewarding the earliest fans who helped bring their vision to life.
In a final twist, Team Cherry has also said they won’t be distributing advance review copies to press or influencers. Instead, the very first people to play Silksong ahead of the general public will be the fans who believed in them during their earliest days.
At Hyped4, we recently had the chance to go hands-on with Silksong at Gamescom 2025, testing it on both PC and the Asus ROG Ally X. Our takeaway? “In just a few minutes it already proves itself to be as rewarding, challenging, and mysterious as the first Hollow Knight, a true metroidvania that doesn’t miss a beat.”
