Sami Thessman, the creative director of 2K, has explained to the Japanese magazine Famitsu the reasons that led the company to make the decision to release three high-profile compilations on the same day, something that is normally considered a negative strategy because it can produce cannibalization of sales. In other words, a user could let a game that interests him or her go by another, and that would mean a potentially lost sale for the company.

“The truth is that we have seen strong demand for all these games on Switch for a long time,” explains Thessman. “So, the reason is that we felt bad about keeping people waiting so long.”

“By announcing the launch of all these games at the same time, we have been able to execute this necessary partnership more effectively and truly strengthen it,” he explains. Therefore, it seems that for 2K, this movement also had the advantage of reinforcing its brand image in the Nintendo Switch catalogue or, what is the same, winning public favour on the console.

“We didn’t put it as an advertising goal or something, but I’m sure it wasn’t just a coincidence,” admits Thessman. However, all that will not be worth much if the company does not maintain its presence in the successful Nintendo console: for now, they cannot “reveal the business strategy.” Still, Thessman assures that “in 2K we consider that our relationship with Nintendo is extremely important. We want to keep releasing games for Nintendo Switch.”

Nevertheless, the fact is that the compilation of Mafia have skipped the Nintendo console and will hit PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
