As Elden Ring: Nightreign prepares for its May 30 launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, Bandai Namco has officially clarified the game’s approach to crossplay—and it’s not as universal as many had hoped.
Elden Ring: Nightreign, the new cooperative action-roguelite spin-off from FromSoftware, will indeed support cross-platform play—but only within the same console family.
Here’s what that means:
PS4 and PS5 players can team up together
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can do the same
No crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, or PC
PC players cannot match with console players, even within Xbox or PlayStation ecosystems
This restriction could be frustrating for groups of friends on different platforms and may pose a challenge for matchmaking if any version of the game ends up with a smaller player base over time.
With Nightreign designed around three-player co-op, cross-platform restrictions could make it harder for players to enjoy the experience with their usual gaming group unless they’re all on the same hardware family. In a game where strategic team-building, survival over three in-game days, and preparation for a massive boss battle are core to the gameplay loop, cooperative synergy is critical.
The lack of full crossplay feels like a step back in an era where most multiplayer games strive for broader platform compatibility to ensure longer player retention and a healthier online ecosystem.
While Nightreign continues to look promising with its roguelite structure, unique heroes, and procedural co-op gameplay, its limited crossplay could be a sore spot for players hoping to connect across platforms. As of now, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco haven’t indicated any plans to expand crossplay post-launch, but fans will be hoping for more flexibility down the line.
