Kromaia Ω Review

Shooting in a Free-Space environment with an old-school flavor.

It would be easy to get lost in the chaotic design companied by arrows, which indicate where cores or pieces you have to shoot/collect in each area are. Without being certain if these collectibles are randomly scattered or not, there are several times that you may feel lost, but guess that’s just a part of the whole experience in these type of games. Controls are well transfered to console version and can’t complain about that aspect.

However, not everything works perfectly. Kromaia concept is not bad, actually quite the opposite, however there are few flaws that’s holding this game back. The third-person camera suffers when there are nearby objects, which becomes frustrating when approaching obstacles or bosses.

Another issue is the repetitive gameplay in order to achieve 5-10 hours minimum expected gameplay time. There are many unforgettable short games, that we loved to play over and over, so a short game doesn’t necessarly mean that it’s bad game. In fact, if your game has a good pace and not repetitive, yet short,  you can still enjoy it repeatedly from start, although these days it is likely that after finishing the campaign, people just move on to the next game.

Following on more issues that we realised is the issue of taking damage as it’s mostly hard to tell the source of damage because they are simply not in your view. This is a problem when you are fighting against the gods: if you are lucky you can get minimal damage to the shield of your ship, however other enemies will focus their fire back of your ship. Having an open space game is great but giving such freedom also comes with greater problems.

Almost psychedelic soundtrack seems to be the most appropriate and totally fits the theme, however the sound effects are weaker and common.

Final Thoughts

Kromaia Omega is a better describes as a Love-hate relationship. You can experience great tension and joy flying through hail of gunfire when/if everything flows as it should, especially with bosses.

Despite its imperfections, such as the lack of any hidden content, fans of the genre will appreciate the proposal, though, at a price slightly higher ($29.99) regarding the content it offers, or you may wait couple months and get it at a discounted rate.

Good

  • When everything flows as it should, great visual experience
  • Soundtrack is well picked and fits the theme

Bad

  • Lack of content and repetitive game.
  • Camera can be frustrating at times

As far as I can remember, I've been surrounded by technology. My father bought us a Commodore 64 so I started playing games as a baby, following my passion with Amiga 500, then PC and so on. I love game related collectibles, and when I'm not collecting I review games, watch movies and TV Shows or you may catch me keeping a low profile at Game Events.
