NetherRealm Studios, at the recent Gamescom 2023 event, unveiled “Invasion,” an innovative mode for the upcoming fighting game, “Mortal Kombat 1.” Set to release on September 19 for platforms including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, this game promises to elevate the single-player experience, reminiscent of its predecessor, “Mortal Kombat 11.”
What is “Invasion”?
“Invasion” is not just another mode; it’s an ever-evolving realm that infuses RPG elements into the classic fighting genre. Designed with a seasonal model, players can expect regular free updates that expand the mode further.
Players navigate through various levels or scenarios, reminiscent of board games. Iconic locations like Johnny Cage’s mansion and Fengjian Village serve as the backdrop. These levels are dotted with nodes or cells, leading players through linear paths, occasionally presenting choices with forks.
As players traverse these paths, they encounter:
RPG Elements and Customization
True to its RPG inspiration, “Invasion” allows players to earn experience points, level up, and enhance their chosen fighter’s attributes. The customization doesn’t end there. Players can tailor their fighter’s play style with unique talents and relics. Progression rewards players with character outfits, usable across all game modes, and other enticing rewards.
NetherRealm Studios has teased “hundreds” of challenges available from day one of “Invasion.” But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Future updates will introduce new stages or boards, each available for a limited duration, packed with unique challenges and rewards.
Narrative Ties
The mode isn’t just about fights and rewards; it’s deeply intertwined with the game’s narrative. Players are tasked with defending the reality crafted by Liu Kang from adversaries intent on obliterating this alternate universe.
