Mark Cerny Reveals How PlayStation VR2 Will Benefit from the Power of the PS5 Pro

The PlayStation 5 Pro is set to launch on November 7, offering enhanced performance for both traditional and virtual reality gaming. With a price tag of €799 (with the disc reader and vertical stand sold separately), the PS5 Pro aims to bridge the gap between performance and visual quality, providing smoother gameplay at higher resolutions. One of the standout announcements is that PlayStation VR2 games will also benefit from the power boost, thanks to the upgraded GPU and advanced AI upscaling technology known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).

Enhanced VR Gaming Experience

Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5 Pro, recently revealed in a report on CNET that the console’s advanced hardware will elevate the PlayStation VR2 gaming experience. The PS5 Pro’s improved graphics processor (GPU) will take full advantage of the PlayStation VR2’s 2000 x 2040 pixel resolution per eye, delivering sharper visuals and more immersive environments.

In addition to the GPU enhancements, the integration of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) promises to further boost visual fidelity. PSSR is an AI-based upscaling technology that works similarly to Nvidia DLSS and Intel XeSS, enabling higher resolutions without overloading the system. Although PSSR does consume GPU resources, Cerny assures that its use will significantly enhance VR games, improving clarity and performance.

The Three Pillars of the PS5 Pro

During the recent introduction of the PS5 Pro, Cerny highlighted three key pillars that define the new system’s capabilities:

  1. Faster GPU: The PS5 Pro boasts a graphics processor that is up to 45% faster than the base PS5, allowing for smoother gameplay and more visually impressive worlds.
  2. Ray Tracing Chip: A dedicated chip for improved ray tracing will provide more realistic lighting and reflections in games, further elevating the gaming experience.
  3. AI Upscaling Technology: The inclusion of PSSR technology ensures that games, including VR titles, can run at higher resolutions with minimal performance loss.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro will come with a larger 2TB NVMe storage drive, significantly more than the 825GB storage of the original PS5, providing more space for larger game installations.

Flexibility for Developers and Upcoming Titles

Game developers have the freedom to optimize their titles for the PS5 Pro, meaning that they can either release new games specifically tailored for the hardware or provide updates for already released titles. Some third-party titles, such as Alan Wake 2, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, have already confirmed their compatibility with the PS5 Pro, with more expected to follow.

As the November 7 release date approaches, excitement is building around the potential improvements the PS5 Pro could bring to both traditional and VR gaming, especially for fans of the PlayStation VR2. With higher resolution, improved performance, and cutting-edge AI technology, the PS5 Pro promises to redefine what players can expect from the next generation of gaming.
